Seabloom Miniature Horse Sanctuary
"Special Needs Minis"

These minis need special care. Some are quite expensive to care for, with frequent Vet bills, constant farrier costs & special supplements & medications. A few are time consuming with special care such as daily massages & other types of therapy.

Mountain Side's Miss Mischief
"Lulu"
AMHA  30"
Born 2005
Black Appaloosa
Lulu is a dear little mare. She is a real pet & always cheerful and into mischief, despite dealing with her special needs. She has had two previous injuries which have required rehabilitation. Her left front fetlock has a serious injury and she has been getting a special shoe made with Vettec Superfast glue as well as a pad under her foot. This is really helping her foot take some pressure off her bad fetlock joint without the added weight of a metal shoe, which would strain her weak shoulder.

    Monashee's Black Beauty
 Born: Jan 1, 1976
    AMHR Age 34 yrs
"Black Beauty" has foundered severely at least three times that we know of.
With the help of our wonderful farrier, Ron, you would never know it, looking at her feet. At age 34 yrs she is starting to show her age. She is slowing down and needs a regulated diet as well as a little extra tlc.She is very spoiled and hangs out with our Newfies.

         Monteith's Dixie
      Born:  April 10, 1982
      AMHA Age 28 yrs
Dixie is a gorgeous mare, even as she shows tell tale signs of age with her greying face.
She is one of my favorite broodmares. She had been on the verge of foundering, when we brought her from Saskatchewan. She had been kept in a lush alfalfa pasture & boy, does Dixie love to eat! She gets quite wheezy if excited or exposed to dust & pollen. Certain times of the year, I make her a nice hot fennel tea which helps her.

Winsome Golden Lassie
Born 2000
Palomino Dun Appaloosa
See Lassie's page here.
Lassie has lived with us since she was a yearling. She had a few health issues to deal with and just when we thought she was healthy, we discovered she was blind. The Vet felt it was caused by a virus. Lassie can see partially, most of the time, but sometimes goes completely blind as the bright white of the snow or a summer day can affect her. When she is bothered, she wears a fly mask as sunglasses & has her own seeing eye buddy.

Freespirits Star Quest
Born 1999
Dun Appaloosa
This sweet little Appaloosa mare came here when her owners had to sell their farm. She had a pasture injury and had very painful arthritic shoulders. She had several treatments including acupuncture. But she just was not comfortable. She came here & always looked miserable with her ears pinned back. She laid down most of the time so I always made sure she had soft bedding in her paddock. The day she came here I started her on glucosomine HCL and daily massages. I gradually saw that she lay down less frequently and  eventually stopped pinning her ears. She had to compensate for her sore shoulders with putting more weight on her hind legs and crossing her her feet in front of each other to walk. I think a combination of the drier climate, the massages and the supplements all contributed to Callie's recovery.
She is now a happy girl and can trot & play with the others. She has produced some lovely foals. Unfortunately, in 2008, she needed a c-section.

Just Daphne
AMHA
     Born April 9, 1981
     Age 29 yrs
Recovering from a broken fetlock, June, 2009
Daphne's leg healed, but the tendons and ligaments tightened, making ler leg now bent to one side. Despite changing her splints and keeping her leg wrapped, it is getting worse. We have been unable to find help to make her a proper leg brace to help her leg. As Daphne is in no pain & cheerfully enjoys life being pampered, I will just continue her special care as long as she is comfortable.
These are a few of our special needs minis.

Many of our Geriatric minis have arthritis and we give them supplements with Glucosomine & MSM.

We are not a funded retirement home and we raise a few Miniature Horse foals each year to help support our retirees and special needs minis. If you are considering a Miniature Horse for your family, please check out our available Miniatures.
