Health issues of  Newfoundland Dogs

If you have done your research on the Newfoundland breed and feel confident that this is the dog to become an important member of your family, then please read on.

These wonderful dogs, because of their large size, are predisposed to various health issues which may not be such a concern in smaller breeds. Please do your research well.

Though, we as breeders, strive to provide a puppy, free of any hereditary defects, this cannot be guaranteed. We do our utmost to provide information to the puppy buyer to help prevent puppy from developing crippling joint problems.
Many can be avoided with proper nutrition for a growing puppy, and controlling the environment to some extent.

For instance, many elbow and hip problems develop, due to allowing puppy to use stairs, or lay on cement or hard surfaces such as ceramic tiles.  In a breed which is predisposed to health problems, this can most assuredly contribute to hip dysplasia and other joint problems, resulting in painful arthritis.
We feed our Newfs vitamin C on a daily basis. This can also help prevent Hip Dysplasia.

We guarantee the Puppy against any crippling hereditary defect until the Puppy attains the age of one year. For the purposes of this agreement,  a “crippling hereditary defect” is defined as any hereditary condition that renders the Puppy unable to function as a pet.

Please note: Our Guarantee does not extend to any puppy who has been allowed to jog on a paved road or lays on a cement floor on a daily basis. These puppies are likely to develop hip and elbow problems.

Our guarantee does extend to puppies who have been properly fed using our guidelines, and whose environment is suitable for a growing puppy.

Hip Dysplasia is almost certain to some degree in most Newfoundland dogs. There are a low percentage who will pass certification to be free of hip dysplasia.
For that reason, we do not guarantee your puppy free of hip dysplasia by xray alone. "Crippling hip dysplasia" renders a dog unable to function as a pet.
Unless you have xrays taken by a Radiologist who can position the hips correctly, most frequently, even good hips will look subluxated in the xray if the leg is not positioned straight enough. All puppies must be kept exercised to keep good muscletone.

A dog who is not properly exercised daily, will not have the muscletone required to keep the joints firm. A puppy which is undernourished or lacks muscletone will likely suffer permanent damage, as the joints will move more loosely. This will also contribute more easily to injuries.
There is no guarantee on a puppy that has not been properly exercised to develop muscletone.
There is no guarantee on undernourished puppies.
There is no guarantee against autoimmune diseases.
All puppies leave here after an examination by a Veterinarian. We provide 6 weeks of Petsecure health insurance. If there are any concerns, Puppy must be checked by a suitable Veterinarian within four days of purchase.
We strongly recommend keeping Puppy on health insurance.

All puppies leave here only after a thorough Vet check and their first vaccinations. By the time they are weaned they are dewormed twice.
